Seeing Beyond the Border is a global vision initiative led by West Valley Empowered Voices Lions Club. Through partnerships with the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) and Lions Clubs both in the United States and abroad, we collect, sort, process, and distribute eyeglasses to underserved communities in West Africa and beyond.

Even a modest number of glasses can transform lives — helping children succeed in school, parents return to work, and families regain dignity and independence.

Restoring sight is often the first step toward education, economic opportunity, and long-term community stability. Through this initiative, we are building a sustainable pipeline that connects donated vision resources in the United States to communities in need around the world.

WHAT WE NEED

To successfully launch and expand Seeing Beyond the Border, West Valley Empowered Voices Lions Club is seeking support in the following areas:

  • Lensometer equipment to accurately measure and categorize donated glasses

  • Collection boxes for community drives throughout the West Valley

  • Storage containers and shelving for secure sorting and organization

  • Shipping and international logistics support for distribution to partner Lions Clubs abroad

  • Volunteers to sort, clean, and package supplies

With the proper infrastructure in place, we will be able to scale this initiative from a single shipment to an ongoing global distribution effort, restoring sight to hundreds — and eventually thousands — of individuals each year.

Passport to possibility

Seeing Beyond the Border is about more than vision care — it’s about creating global citizens. Our Passport to Possibility initiative encourages Lions, Leos, and families to obtain passports and begin seeing themselves as part of a broader world.

By taking this first step, we prepare our community to embrace cultures, perspectives, and opportunities beyond our own borders. This initiative lays the foundation for future projects that will connect service here at home to impact across the globe.
